Meelie had her cheerleading competition at SeaWorld this weekend. It went really great and her team did well. I’ll talk about what is left of my hearing in another post.
We had to be at the park at o'dark thirty to pick up our tickets and get the schedules. The competitions were delayed off and on all day due to rain, until they finally called them, and said they would continue the next day. That was fine because Meelie was all done. Which meant we could spend some leisure time at the park on Sunday to see what we had missed. We'd seen some of the attractions on Saturday, before we had to be at the stadium.
Saturday night, we went to dinner at a really fun place called Gatorsville, which was actually located on the hotel grounds! Yay for not getting lost again in Orlando! We stopped off at an ice cream parlor (also on hotel grounds) and took a nice walk around. When we hit the room, the girls were more than ready to fall asleep. So was I for that matter.
Then came the accident. Sunday morning, Meelie was standing by the bed and she jumped on it, the intent being to land on her tummy. The only problem was that her whole body didn’t hit the bed, just up to her hips, and her legs went down and her feet hit the floor. Her big toe on her right foot took the brunt of it. She said it just hurt a bit but as time wore on, it became apparent that it was a lot worse than that. Chickie said she heard a loud smack.
It wasn’t long before she said she wanted to go home, but I have to admit, she hung in there for a long time. She really didn't want to miss anything. We headed on out to the car and then towards home (I sort of got lost and suspect I took the long way to I95…but hey, I made it).
By the time we arrived at Chez Moogie, Meelie was really hurting and her big toe was rather swollen.
So yesterday, we spent the day at the doctor’s office, and then the orthopedist's office (after x-rays revealed a hairline fracture!). Long and the short of it is, she has a “designer shoe.” It really helps her walk. She’s having a tough time not being able to do anything “fun.” I’ve already caught her riding her scooter and she’s asked me over and over again if she can jump on the trampoline. She’s a tough cookie.
I spoke to the coach (cheer leading) tonight and she has said that Meelie can still compete. She'll just go through a lot of the motions of the dance moves and such. I'm not sure how that will work out, but I figure, she's probably experienced a lot of injuries with kids, so she knows what she is doing. Needless to say, Meelie is thrilled. She's at practice right now and I can't wait to hear how it all turned out.
Here is a picture of our princess, with her new designer shoe. Sissy has promised to help her decorate it tonight after they both get home.
If you'd like to leave a comment for Meelie, as a way of encouragement, or to share your stories when you have hurt yourself, please do so and I'll make sure to print them out and show them to her. Please emphasize how important it is to DO WHAT YOUR DOCTOR TELLS YOU and that, perhaps, jumping on the trampoline or doing cartwheels may not be such a good idea.

I bet it hurts. How are you and Ward being doing? Are you still getting my jokes? I have not heard from you lately, Cat

Ouch! Meelie jumping on a trampoline isn't gonna help it get any better, it's going to slow down the healing process and you WOULD NOT want that to happen - think of it this way the quicker it gets better the quicker you can get on the trampoline, your scooter and back to doing everything that you did before. Count yourself lucky it's only a hairline fracture it could have been a lot worse!
Me I did do something stupid like that, well that and an apprent nice triple sumersault that I don't remember - could have been something to do with fact I was OUT COLD, long & short of it was off school for 2 weeks, and I couldn't even do any training or Gym class for another 6 weeks and that was just bruising okay to my leg but still just let it heal and DO AS YOUR ASKED by the nice DOCTOR, they didn't spend 6 yrs of their lives learning all the stuff they know to overruled by a kid :P

Ouch Meelie . Hope it feels better soon . Unfortunatly though you do need to rest it otherwise it will take longer to heal :o( . I know someone who tied to play soccer with a fractured toe and in the end he had to have it repinned ( he now really wished he had rested it) .

Meelie, if you don't do as your doctor says and you stress your foot, you could get all mental and stuff. Owies that aren't paid attention to make you lose brain cells. Just ask your mom.
*snicker*
Seriously though, I've had one too many concussions and that'll teach me to head butt football players in junior high school. (Um, I'm a bit older now and just blame my senility on my kids. Seems fair.)

And um, oh yeah....STAY OFF THE FOOT!
(Besides if you're out jumping around on the trampoline and doing all kinds of cool scooter stuff, how do you expect mom to fall for the helpless routine and give you tons of sympathy and spoiling??)

Hi Meelie,
I broke my toe once when I was running late for a date with my future husband and pushed my leg into my jeans so hard that I hit my toe on the floor and broke it.
Pretty silly, huh?

Oh Meelie. That's got to hurt! I like your stylish new shoe, though, and I'm sure it's getting you a lot of extra attention at school and at home, right?
When I was six, I was sipping on a fudgsicle on the porch outside my house. I was wearing my new purple pyjamas, and I was with my sister. It was a warm night, so the fudgsicle began to melt. I didn't want to get my new jammies dirty, so I leaned over to let my snack drip onto the ground. Well, I lost my balance and went tumbling down the stairs - six of 'em, all concrete.
I remember screaming after I landed. I couldn't get up. People came running from everywhere - my parents from inside the house, my neighbors from all over the street - and my dad picked me up carefully and drove me to the hospital.
I broke my left leg, right on the shin. I was in a cast - non-walking - all summer. No swimming, no playing, nothing. But I got lots of treats!
So while you rest (a lot...it's important, otherwise it won't heal right), I hope you'll let everyone around you treat you with extra care. More pillows when you want 'em, your choice of what music to listen to at night, and maybe an extra bit of dessert at dinnertime. It's OK if folks fuss over you a bit, as long as you listen to the big kahuna-docs who tell you to stay off of it for a bit.
Zach's still limping from his broken leg - he has to build up his muscles after being in a cast for so long - and he wishes you a speedy recovery. Now you both have pretty cool stories to tell!

My advice is this: listen to your doctor. After my first foot surgery, I overdid it and wound up needing a second. That time, I wore the "shoe" and took my time healing, and the long term results were much better. A neighbor recommends liquid calcium supplements; you might look into it.
