During the week, dinner can be somewhat a catch-as-catch-can kind of thing. The girls can't eat a full dinner before cheer/dance, but are seriously hungry when they get home (even with a snack before they go). My husband, if I ignore him, could be left completely at the wayside. Luckily, I rarely forget.

More often than not, on nights such as these, I throw him a meal together. He is so easy. I know what to stay away from (very little) and he is so grateful to have any kind of a dinner. Let me say here that he is more than capable of fending for himself, but I kind of like making something up for him. He is always so appreciative. He always tells me how good dinner is. Even if it's just a can of soup that I've doctored up in one way or another.

Meelie is just like him. She'll eat just about anything. In fact, she eats better than my husband, and that's saying a lot. Chickie is getting there. She's always been my picky eater, but she's working on it, and has been brave enough to try new things. I'm very proud of her. She's very much like me. We both hate the majority of vegetables.

How about your family? Do they all eat well? Are there any picky members? What do you do when you have to be a short-order-cook on the nights when everyone is running in a different direction?

Those crazy nights...where we have basketball practice x 2kids AND soccer practice AND Cub Scouts (and don't forget that HUGE project that is due tomorrow that someone forgot about and will now have to finish in twenty minutes)...those nights are leftover nights or sandwiches. I am mean and don't give the kids much choice on what they have for dinner most nights.

That said, my kids are great eaters and can generally be coaxed into a healthy meal - eventually. Especially when the threat is "it's this or you starve." Evil. That's my middle name!

I don't do the short order cook thing. We all eat the same thing, unless we have to stop along the way during running around and pick something up.

The kids get home, have a snack, and get thier homework done. On Mondays I bring snack with me when I pick them up. (Kasia's new TKD schedule has her there immediately after school on Mondays; and that's when Em has counseling twice a month - same time. It's just too long to go between school and when we get to eat dinner.)

I do try to cook what everyone likes (for the most part) but sometimes we have "experimental night" and we'll be split in our decision. Usually though if they don't like the meat, there's side dishes they like (and can eat more of), etc. But I won't cook separate meals for picky eaters.

Mike catches stuff on the way to work if necessary. (He works nights, so we eat at 6 and sometimes he sleeps in to the last minute and doesn't have time to eat dinner before he goes. In that case, he'll take a container of whatever it is for dinner with him for his lunch break.)

Emily had texture issues, but like I said, for the most part there's at least two things in the meal that everyone likes - so if they don't like one portion fo the meal, they have others to eat more of.

And if all else fails, they can have a bowl of cereal in a pinch.
