This week's topic over on Blog Fodder is a good one. Not only that, it's easy, and I'm all for the easy.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?

Do I have a word limit for this one?

Ok, here they are, in no particular order:

  1. Nurse
  2. Police Officer
  3. Social Worker
  4. Probation Officer
  5. Physical Therapist
  6. Lawyer
  7. Graphic Artist
  8. Engineer

That's only a partial list. When I got out of high school, I went to a Junior (Community) College because I honestly didn't know what I wanted to "be when I grew up." Then I decided to move out from the comforts of my parent's home, and live on my own And experience life! The real world! Paying my own bills! Making my own decisions! Did I mention paying my own bills?

The funny thing about this whole thing is that I got along really well with my parents. I had passed the point of "they are so stupid and don't know anything" and moved on to a point in which I really enjoyed being with them. In fact, when I first moved out, I probably spent more time with them than I did in my own apartment.

I would say that I have regretted that decision ever since but on the flip side, I would never have experienced what I have so far if I didn't make that move. Don't get me wrong. If I had it to do all over again I would have stayed home and gotten the degree. Instead, I went to school part time, here and there, while holding a full time job. The education? She was sporadic. In my late 30's I decided it was time and went back to school (still working) but this time? I had the benefit of being married with two small children. I am here to tell you that it was really hard. But I did it in a little over two years AND I graduated, with honors even. It felt so good to have done something entirely for me, because "I" wanted it. I am oh-so-glad I have that behind me now.

So there you have it, albeit in a little more of an expanded version than I originally planned. I still don't know what I want to be when "I grow up" but I'm pretty happy with the job I have now.

It's your turn now. What did you want to be when you grew up? Don't forget to leave a link over in the comments at Blog Fodder so that we can all come over and check it out. Heck, I'll go easy on you. If it's easier, just leave it in the comments.

I always wanted to be an astronaut! I started reading science fiction in my early teens and had always had a fascination with space - I still vividly remember the apollo moon shots.

I wanted to work in a bandaid factory.

My sisters wanted to be: a gas pumper, a strawberry picker, and a princess.

Lofty ambitions, eh?

What I wanted to be, and what I have ended up doing are so far removed, you don't wanna know how...
But, as a Greenkeeper, Agronomist and working in a World Class Botanic Garden, I am happy!!
Here from Michele's today (you beat me by a milisecond, so I am going to both you and Panthergirl)...

I wanted to be an archeologist until I discovered that you weren't allowed to keep your "treasures" . Then I wanted to work with animals in some way. Now I'm a psychotherapist who works mainly with children/adolescents. My 5 year old has always wanted to be a doctor but told me the other day that she's changed her mind and now wants to be a "fire hydrant" so she can save people (fire fighter?)!

That's an amazing, diverse list you have there. :-)
If you don't mind my asking, what were some of the influences on those career interests?

Hi from Michele's

I think Somewhere on that list would have been Police Officer. If i wasn't so outta shape in High School I would have probably considered that field afterwards.

That's partially my story too. I'm 44 now and shortly after my 45th birthday in December I'll be the proud recipient of a BA in government-journalism... Magna Cum Laude no less. It was hard and it took everything I had and then some, but I did it for myself and no one can ever take it away.

Hi Moogie from Michele and me. I wanted to be an actress but trained as a nurse, then became a model and finally had my own business. you should be very proud of all you have achieved. Well done!

I wanted to be a vet as a kid.
I started in college but got pregnant and married so young that I really never had a chance to make any career plans.

My 3 year old thinks I'm stupid and don't know anything. He wants to be the Hulk and wants to move out on Thursday. I'm devastated.

Me? I wanted to be a pilot. Now, I hate to fly. Go figure.

Very interesting, Moogie...In what field did you end up? Anything close to yoyr dreams as a child?

Except for a Bizarre few minutes when I was nine and thought I wanted to be a doctor....I always wanted to be in the Arts. And actress or a singer or something to do with show business.....
And that is what I did. Plus, I also became a painter---(Well I always was...)And began showing and selling my art.....So, Artist, Writer, Composer, Singer, Actress, Producer....ALL of it. There you have it Moogiw.
