Blog Fodder - Week #1

Holy smokes people! Somebody should have warned me about kids and school/other activities in the weeks before Christmas. And all of the extra practicing that goes with it. Tonight is the first time I've been home for more than one hour straight. When you add homework to the list, you kind of lose all sense of time. It's sheer bliss when your head hits the pillow at night.

Now, where was I? Oh yes, Blog Fodder.

This week's topic was submitted by Jean-Luc Picard. He has the honor of kicking off Blog Fodder. Without further ado, I present to you, this week's topic.

"What are some of your memorable experiences at school?"

I have about 1,000 answers for this one. There are so many memories. I kind of flipped a coin and decided to go with this one. Not nearly as good as the one’s I’ve seen so far.

I never really got in trouble at school. I was too shy to draw attention to myself, so I pretty much just stayed in the background. There was this girl, named Linda. We basically never had anything to do with each other. She was popular, I was not. She thought she could boss everyone around. Apparently, I disagreed with her this time.

We were playing tetherball, and the whistle was blown. Basically, this meant you had to gather your stuff together and get back into the classroom. Linda and I were highly competitive in tetherball. I loved the game, and even had one set up at home. I began to untie the ball, but Linda wasn't ready to quit. We hadn't finished our game. She shoved me. I shoved her back. I think we both threw a couple of punches (nothing to cause injury), and chaos ensued.

Then we heard the dreaded whistle again. Only this time when I looked up, there was a teacher headed right for us. Linda and I quickly stopped our skirmish, and got the tetherball down, becoming fast friends in the process.

The teacher purposefully strode toward us, looking extremely unhappy. We were doomed. He told us that he would be calling our parents to tell them that we had been in a fight. The normal speech ensued about how fighting, under any circumstances was completely unacceptable. Blah, blah, blah. Truth be told, I didn't hear anything past "I'm going to call your parents." I don't think Linda did either.

We meekly went inside the classroom and spent the remainder of the day together attached at the hip. I was so scared to go home.

To this day, I don't know if he really did call our parents or not, and in talking to Linda, neither does she because they never approached either one of us about the subject. I honestly think he saw just how scared we were, and figured that we had learned a good lesson.

From that day forward, Linda and I, though not best friends, got along really well. We were still highly competitive in tetherball, and later four square, but we never fought again.

I really have no idea how come that memory stuck, and popped its head out (think Caddy Shack and Gophers) when this topic came up. Suffice to say, I never did get in another fight. Unless it was with my brothers because that doesn’t count. They deserved it.

Christmas Presents

Do any of you have problems buying Christmas presents for your kids? The things they want either cost about as much as a mortgage payment, or aren't enough to even put in a stocking. It was much easier when they were young. I need to just go with them to a store, and have them point out ideas to me, or better yet, as they are both excellent surfers, have them give me the link to items they want. Come to think of it, shopping on-line is not a bad idea.

My oldest daughter loves clothes. But she is very picky about what she wears and is difficult to fit because she is tall, and slender, and has a long torso. She loves Pac Sun and Journey, to name a few, but that limits the number of items I could get her because they are more on the expensive side. Truth be told, I'm not sure what all else she wants.

My youngest's ideas for Christmas presents changes about every 15 minutes. It's ok to get clothes, especially if they are pink, but she would rather have toys. Or something related to the Georgia Bulldogs. Of the two, she is probably easier to buy for, but again, she changes her mind so often it is hard to keep up and I generally have to start drinking so I can stay sane.

Both of the girls want Heely's this year. I'm of two minds about this. Obviously, I'm worried about the safety issues. Should I make them wear protective gear? I see alot of kids wearing them in all kinds of places, with no gear at all. I could use this as their "big" gift and that would be a big help. I am having trouble finding them on line (where you can get them at a better price) in my eldest daughter's size. She wears a 9 1/2 - 10 women’s. Yeah, me too.

So there you have it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Belly Laughs

If you can get through this without laughing, I think you might have a serious problem.

If you'll excuse me, I need to go change my pants.

Something tells me I'm in trouble

As I was picking out the clothes for Meelie to wear this morning (8 years old), I held up a top and she said, "mom, that's tacky." The second one I held up did not fair any better.

"Mom, that's hideous!"

And now, she is out back with one of her little friends, jumping on the trampoline and singing at the top of her lungs.

Do your ears hang low,
do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot?
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them over your shoulder,
When the wind begins to blow?
Do your ears hang low?

(Only substitue ears for a part of your anatomy that is above your belly button and below your chin).

And she learned it from her sister.

MUST.NOT.LAUGH.

What must the neighbors be thinking?

Capturing Wallyworld

Earlier this week the girls and I went to Huddle House for breakfast and then off to Walmart. I decided to take my camera with me to take some pictures I’ve never taken a camera into a restaurant (unless it was a celebration of some sort) and it was an odd experience to say the least. Chickie and I decided to bring our books so we could read, and Melie brought along some paper and colored pencils so she could draw some of her Pokemon characters. All in all, it was quit a relaxing breakfast. When we were finished, we headed off to Walmart. As always, click on any image in this post to make it larger.

Taking photos in Warlmart was even more awkward than taking them in Huddle House. When I was in the produce section, I definitely made two of the workers rather nervous if the looks on their faces were anything to go by. I took pity on them and told them what I was doing, which completely put them at ease. I found that as I was taking the photos, I realized that there were so many different types of things to choose from that I had never before been aware of. It was somewhat mind boggling. When I go shopping, I pretty much know what I want and I pick it up and move on. When you are looking for things to photograph, it forces you to take a look around to see if you can spot a good "subject" so you are more aware of your surroundings.

Take cheese for example. In this photo I was only looking at the grated cheese, hanging up in packages. I wasn't even able to capture all of them. Keep in mind, this doesn't include any of the blog cheeses, or specialty cheeses either. When I was looking at the larger photo, I zoomed and cropped it in to "Chipotle" cheese, which was one that I had never heard of. Granted, the package says it’s new, but had I not been taking pictures, I probably wouldn't have even noticed it. Speaking of cheese, have you noticed the different kinds of cream cheese and the wide variety of cheese spreads they have? It's amazing. I have to say that I do love the grated cheeses, even though they aren't as economical as the blocked cheeses. When you are pressed for time, it's so nice to have it already grated for you. It saves on the wear and tear of your fingers as well. Not that I would know anything about that.

There are so many different varieties of things that if you take the time to look at them all, you will be in the store for a year. Not only are there a ton of different grated cheeses to choose from, there are a staggering amount of types of bagged lettuce. I will be the first to admit, I loved the lettuce that is already bagged. It makes creating a salad much easier. Generally, at the beginning of each week, I'll take a back of Spring Mix, and then one such as the Italian Blend, along with some mushrooms, green onions and bell peppers, and make it up ahead of time. I can store it in an air tight container so it will stay fresh until we have finished with it. They still have the heads of lettuce that I was used to growing up, and bunches of Romaine and others, but it seems like the pre-packaged lettuce is taking over. The various types of lettuce shown in the large photo is only the tip of the iceberg (ba-dum-bum).

They even sell live lobsters at Walmart. Would you look at the size of those claws? That makes it pretty obvious as to why they tie them shut. We had the pleasure of watching one of the butchers remove a couple of them from the tank for a customer. It was pretty cool to watch. Even though their claws were rendered harmless, the butcher was taking no changes. Of course, like the brilliant person that I am, I just stood there and watched instead of photographing it.

Heaven help me if I ever to a camera into a crafts store. What about you? Do your stores have alot of variety? How does it compare to when you were growing up?

Thirteen Imaginary Worlds

I got this week's entry idea from the book "Uncle John's Electrifying Bathroom Reader for Kids Only." This is a book that my daughter is currently reading. For anyone who has kids that like to learn about interesting (sometimes strange facts) this is an excellent book for them.

For my 11th edition of Thursday 13, I have decided to make a list of 13 Imaginary Worlds. Your job is to guess the book or movie it came from. You get extra points if you can guess which one is also the name of a real place.

Enjoy!!

  1. Hogwards
  2. Never-Never Land
  3. Camelot
  4. Thousand Acre Wood
  5. Pern
  6. Wild Island
  7. Narnia
  8. Lilliput
  9. Middle Earth
  10. Gotham City
  11. Tatooine
  12. Emerald City

Grocery Shopping and other stuff

This has been a whirlwind of a weekend, and it's not because I have started my Christmas shopping yet, thank you very much. We just had a lot of errands to run. We got all of them accomplished, and that included my weekly grocery shopping.

Do you do ever do something dumb and NOT learn from it? Normally, I'm a quick learner, but sometimes, you need to roll over me with a truck to get things to sink in. I'm just that dense. Or perhaps my parents would say stubborn. With me, it's hard to tell the difference.

What is the one cardinal rule about grocery shopping? Never, ever, ever go shopping when you are hungry. Never. This morning my girlfriend called and she was heading into the city to go to Sam's Club and then finish up at our local grocery store. She came over and asked if I wanted to go, and I did, so I quickly hopped into the shower and got ready.

I hadn't eaten anything for breakfast and it was about 10:30 when we left. I love Sam's Club. It's just like Costco. I tend to get my meats there, as well as snacks and a few other popular items that I use regularly. I had to restrain myself from buying out the entire store. I was that hungry. I managed to get out of there without having to sell my husband on the street, so that was a good thing, but I'm here to tell you it was very close.

I'm just thankful they have "samples" there. At least it took the edge off.

I really do love Costco except for one thing. They don't bag your items, (makes for interesting times when you are loading up your car, and then carrying them into the house) and they all come in bulk sizes. Which means that when you get home, you have to figure out where to store everything. Furthermore, I never seem to get out of there for under $200. Oh wait, that's three things. Maybe Math isn’t much subject after all. Carry on.

Brain Food

Uncle John’s Electrifying Bathroom Reader, For Kids Only! (By the Bathroom Reader’s Institute)

I kid you not. That is the title of the book that Chickie picked out on our jaunt to Books A Million this afternoon. In all honesty, the book is filled with fascinating, yet sometimes rather odd facts.

In one chapter, they talk about towns and how they are used to describe the land around them. They go on to list a few of them that make you wonder just what the founders were smoking. I’ve listed a few of them below.

  • Burnt Corn, Alabama
  • Toad Suck, Arkansas
  • Gas, Kansas
  • Hoop and Holler, Texas
  • Bumpass, Virginia
  • Okay, Oklahoma (Get it? Okay, OK?)

What about you? Do you know of any funny named towns?

Blog Fodder!

Topics so far: 51 Goal: 52
(Be sure to check here for the list of topics we have so far. We are getting closer and closer to our goal which is 52 topics. Come on folks, you can do it!!! You can post more than one topic and don't forget to bring your friends!)

We have all suffered from writer's block at some point. You sit down at your computer, log in and suddenly your eyes glaze over while you are staring at the monitor. What happened to all of those wonderful posting ideas you thought about during the day? The one's where you say to yourself "I am so gonna post about this!"

I can't tell you how many times I've experienced this, so I thought we could try something new. The purpose of Blog Fodder is to write some ideas down about different things to post about. They can be funny, thought provoking, asking for advice, general day-to-day happenings. For the most part, no topic is off limits but I do ask that you keep it clean.

Here's what you need to do. In the comment section, provide a topic that we can all post about. I'll compile the list, and weekly, I'll create a post for Blog Fodder, which will include the topic, and a link to the person who submitted it. A Blogroll of all of the participants will be created, so that each week you can go and visit them to see what they have to say on the current topic. It will be a good way to get to know everyone.

You don't have to participate every week if you don't have the time, and there is no specific day you have to post it on. Just make sure you come back and leave a comment when you do. It's as simple as that.

So what do you say?

Ready....set....go!

PS: Submissions for buttons for Blog Fodder are also being accepted. Just email them to me at: moogiesworldATgmailDOTcom, or click the email button on the left hand side. I'll create a new page that will display all of them (as well as the creator's link). Now what are you waiting for?

I would love to stay and chat

I was just informed that Meelie (who now wants to be called Squirrel on this blog) needs to bring a snack for the whole class for the big "Pajama Party" tomorrow. She has picked out the pajamas, layed out the robe (she has to wear tennis shoes) and is set to go.

She just needs the "snack."

First off, why don't I get to wear pajamas to work? And secondly? What the heck am I going to make for the snack?

Dear Betty Crocker,

I love you.

Moogie

PS: To the teachers of Meelie the Squirrel (if you see how she squirms while sitting you will understand why I find this to be funny). I know you are busy. But do you think that you could give me a little more notice about the whole "snack" thing? I love my daughter very much. I realize you probably told the whole entire class about this at the beginning of the week. You need to understand that The Squirrel has memory issues. She has none.

PPS: Do you think you can keep the recorder at school during Thanksgiving vacation? There will be an extra brownie in it for you.

Geography Lessons

My husband didn't agree with me that watching the Mrs. America Pageant was a good lesson in Geography for the kids. My response? "What better way is there to learn about all of the states? I suppose you want them to look at a map or something."

Perhaps this is why I'm only allowed to chaperone on field trips.

Carry on.

If I only had a brain

Algebra. Gak! Pffffttt!!!

It has been a while since I have wrestled with Algebraic equations. I just spent the better part of an hour working with Chickie on her Math homework. It all came back, but it took a bit of concentration, and dust removal from the recesses of my brain, or what is left of it. Of course, we made an executive decision that a couple of scoops of double fudge ice cream would really help her understand better. Desperate times, desperate measures and all of that.

I really love Algebra, unless it is word problems. Ask my Dad. He spent countless hours helping me on them, and to this day I still struggle with it. I love formulas. I love numbers. They come pretty easy to me, so I find myself having to step back a few paces when I'm helping my daughter comprehend it. And I've learned what patience is all about. Just because it makes sense to me, doesn't mean that she automatically gets it. I've had to be creative in teaching her. It's good for me. And it's good for her.

By the time we were done, she really had it down pat. For today anyway.

For the record? She finished 7 of the missing assignments. The remaining three are reading assessments which will take a couple of days to complete because they are a bit more complicated.

Now, if the lesson from this weekend will just stick, we'll be home free. Somehow though, I think I'll be retaining the title of Drill Sergeant for a while.

Get down and give me 10 soldier!

Meet the Peep

Peep I would like to take this time to introduce to you, the newest member of our family. I apologize for the delay, but I've been having some technical difficulties in which uploading photos on to my blog tends to make it hung-over. So for the time being, I am using Flickr. Why I didn't think of it before, I have no idea. But at least now I have a way to get my photo fix. The shakes were getting pretty bad.

So, this is Peep. He is a short haired hamster, and like every other animal in this house, I did not name him. If the amount of attention she gets is any indication, this hamster will be seriously easy going. Sugar (short for Sugar and Spice but I am too lazy to type out his full name) the guinea pig is the same way. The only difference is that Sugar is somewhat fickle. We've not quite figured it out but there are some people that he tends to bite nibble on. So basically, we have some pretty tame rodents in our house.

Peep and his ball Peep loves to go in his ball and roam freely about the house. She's really learning to negotiate tight corners and tables with chairs. I think one of the funniest things is when she rolls down the step from our living room into the sun room. I'm thankful there is only one step.

She is really a delight to have around. It's my firm belief that this hamster is psychotic because once she is out of her cage you can almost visualize her standing on her hind legs and shouting "Ok people! Let's get the party started! Where are the alphalpha blocks?"

The Peepster I should probably point out that I am grateful to Peep. I love Peep. When we went to PetSmart, presumably to get a replacement fish (we got 2), Chickie started agitating for a hamster. To be fair, she had lost Gingi (her guinea pig) a few months earlier and was only just ready to start thinking of a new pet of her own. This time, I decided to let this guy handle it. He used to always tease me that whenever the girls and I went to PetSmart he was never sure what we would come home with. I decided to let my husband handle it this time, and he was dead set against getting another pet. Oh, when I left them? They were looking at the rats. I feel the need to confess that I told my husband if he agreed on a rat he would be sleeping outside. For the rest of his life.

So off I went to look at all of the different dog treats and toys. Abandonment? Yes, clearly it was but I wanted him to have a clear picture of what I faced each and every time I walked into that wretched store with two adolescents in tow.

As you can see, he succumbed to their vast charm and puppy dog eyes because we came home with a hamster. Named Peep.

Drill Sergeant

Apparently I own that title in my household. Bwaaaahahaahaha!!!!

Especially when it comes to homework assignments. Which I was told were done. And then I received and email from the teacher telling me said child was missing 10 of them. And I made her do them anyway. Even though she was getting a high grade in the class.

Let's just say someone had a long weekend. And it wasn't me.

Photo problems

When you're strange,
Faces come out of the rain,
When you're strange.
No one remembers your name,
When you're strange,
When you're strange,
When you're strange.**

Since the recent hacking of my site, and subsequent upgrade in MT, I suddenly find myself unable to upload photos to my blog. In order to to minimize my annoyance and lower my blood pressure, I thought I would take a look around and see what was going on in the real world. You know the one I'm talking about? Where you are not staring at a monitor trying to figure out something to write?

  • While I may not be able to upload photos, this poor woman can't take any. That would drive me nuts because I have become one with my camera. The sad part is, my children are so used to me carrying a camera around they don't even notice. I have to hand it to her, she is handling it much better than I would.
  • I was saddened to learn of this man's passing today. He was a newsman of strong opinion but he never let that opinion get in the way of what he saw. May God grant peace to his wife and family during their time of grief.
  • The break up of this couple doesn't really surprise me, nor does the "mini-trend" mentioned in this article. I wonder why that is?
  • In the blogging world, we had a near disaster with a specially designed costume (why do children have to grow anyway?), that was conquered with sheer brilliance and talent of a needle and scissors. I'm lucky if I can sew a button on straight. Is that dinosaur not the third cutest child you have ever seen?
  • My youngest daugher is busily snapping photos of pretty much everything she sees. Some of them are me. It's a shame I can't upload, isn't it? Thank you God.

And on that note, I think I will close this post. Mainly, because it really doesn't have a point. It's also because Meelie has somehow managed to take all of the dirt from the outside, and carefully spread it all around her cute little self. I wonder if Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser will help?

**Three points to the person who can name the song and the artist in the first part of this post.

Thursday Thirteen - #10

Thirteen Different things about Georgia

I lived in California for the majority of my life, mostly in the Bay Area. In about a week, I will have been here for three years. It's so hard to believe. The time has just flown by. I remember when I first moved here how lonely I was and how much I missed my friends. I felt so lucky to have my parents live only about 3 hours away. I think that was one of the things that helped me keep sane.

I've often been asked if it was a culture shock to move here and I always respond affirmatively. Truth be told, I really believe the biggest culture shock would be moving from Georgia to California but that's just my perspective.

For my 10th edition of Thursday 13, I decided to list some of the differences I've noticed during my time here. Hopefully, my blog won't crash this time.

Enjoy!!

  1. Heat and humidity: That took some getting used to.
  2. Bugs: I'm convinced that some of those bugs are big enough to carry off my oldest child.
  3. Hurricanes: Call me crazy but I still prefer the idea of a hurricane over an earthquake. At least you can see those coming!
  4. Traffic: Keep in mind that I'm 35-40 miles from a big city. I find it amusing to listen to people talk about traffic. I itch to show them what real traffic is all about by taking them for a drive on 101 during rush hour.
  5. Yes Mam: It took me a while to get used to this. Everyone uses Mam or Sir. My kids picked up on it really fast. I've come to really like it.
  6. Southern Hospitality: The majority of people here are very friendly. I can't tell you how many times a perfect stranger has struck up a conversation with me in the grocery store. This was a major adjustment to me, but definitely a pleasant one.
  7. BBQ: It's something you eat, not a way of cooking. I've been initiated into the world of pulled pork and beef brisket.
  8. Grits: Like BBQ, I love this southern dish and have learned that "grits aren't just for breakfast anymore. Sadly, only Meelie shares my love of them.
  9. Self imposed segregation: There is a definite distinction between the black and white populations, mostly self-imposed, on both sides. I must admit to being completely blown away by this. California is a melting pot, in which all races for the most part, co-exist. I still don't like it but have learned to keep my foot out of my mouth.
  10. Housing Costs: Holy smokes! The house we are living in right now (we are on an acre) would go for at least 1 million where we lived in California. The difference is hard to fathom.
  11. Country Music: It's seriously popular here. Most of the major radio stations are all about Country Music. The scary thing is? I'm starting to like it.
  12. Religion: Baptists are a serious presence here. 80% of the churches here are of that faith. Religion is much more prevalent here.
  13. Slower pace of life: This one took me a long time to get used to. Nothing is hurried here. I had to conscientiously force myself to slow down and relax. It used to drive me nuts!

Some days you just get chicken poop

I am fortunate enough to have children who get along the majority of the time. But I feel the need to admit, that the part of the time they do not get along, I want to move out. If you think I am kidding, you should have been at my house tonight.

As much as I love this big guy, there are times that I would love to send him to his room as well. For the love of Paul and all that is holy, just who is the adult here? He gives good snuggle and takes out the trash. It makes it easier to overlook most of the other stuff.

"March that ugly face into your room and don't bother to come out until your pretty face is back on!" You know the saying, if I had a dime for every time I said that, then I would be a millionaire. Or at least have enough money to get my own apartment where there would be no children allowed.

Yes, it was one of those.

The thing that gets me the most, is that after all of the door slamming, I hate you, NO's later, my oldest child happily went off to Pointe class and I have been cursed blessed with listening to my youngest play Hot Cross Buns on the recorder for the last hour. I timed it. I am now listening to it for the eleventy gazillionth time. I remember when my oldest played the same song, as many times, on the same instrument.

God must have a sadistic sense of humor because, while my eyes are going and my body is failing, my hearing is still intact.

All I can say to you is that it's a good thing they are so cute when they are asleep.

Ok, now it's your turn. What sayings do you tend to repeat? Would you be a millionaire?

Learning from your mistakes

Well, I can sit here at my computer and say that the latest hacking experience and the damage it did is now over. I am, of course, crossing my fingers but am trying my hardest to be positive. I am certain that you, my dear readers, are sick and tired of hearing about my tales of woe. For this, I will thank you heartily. Because, no matter what you were feeling, you did nothing but offer me support, whether it be through comments or just your emails.

Secondly, I would like to thank Total Choice Hosting, who helped me out immensely and were extremely helpful to me when I most needed it. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. I have learned some valuable lessons, and one of them is to back up early and often. It's a lesson I won't soon forget.

My thanks must extend to this man, who is part of this service. He (well, they as a team) rocks. He fixed all of my compromised files and even upgraded me to the latest version of MT. I didn't lose anything and the service, much like my host, was fast and effective. People, these folks are awesome. They not only design your dream site, they support it whenever you have problems, after the fact. They don't just drop you after they make your design. Now THAT my friends, is the ultimate in customer service.

And of course, I cannot forget this wonderful gentleman, who was there to support me and give me different things to research. He was my temperature check, if you will, and helped me weed through some of the terminology I was reading. I'm guessing he doesn't have a clue as to how much he calmed me and made me realize everything was going to be ok.

I'm going to stop now because I am beginning to sound like an Academy Award show, and quite frankly, that makes me nauseous.

So be looking for some regular posting. In which I will tell you about two new fish we purchased, as well as the newest member of our family named Peep.

As heard while I'm sitting in the office

"Will someone please help me? I'm cleaning the toilet. Am I the only janitor around here?"

And a little bit later.....

"Clean toilet on aisle 5!

No, I didn't ask.

Things still not right

Hi all!

Just wanted to stop by and say hi. Just got back from 3 days of training down in Florida and didn't have a lot of time to spend on the computer.

Still having problems with Moogie's World. It seems my site has been "compromised" (host's words) and I'm scrambling to save the things I can before they "refresh" me, which hopefully means I won't lose alot.

It just breaks my heart but I'm trying to save what I can and I am having some help with the folks who designed the site so I'm crossing my fingers we can fix it on this end and not need any further help.

To top that off, I had computer problems of my own in which a memory stick failed. Between that and the site problems, I just about drove myself nuts. Luckily, the computer is back up and running and no longer does the "spontaneous crash."

Hope to be back up and running full speed ahead in the next few days. Thanks for your patience.

Drop me a line if you have the time. I could use the encouragement and good vibes.
